Introducing Grok, Elon Musk's debut venture from his latest endeavor, xAI.
Taking inspiration from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," Grok is designed with a touch of humor and a dash of defiance, equipped to tackle the kind of provocative queries that might stump other AIs, xAI revealed last Saturday.
In a teaser on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Musk showcased Grok’s sassy reply to an illicit request for a cocaine recipe, with the AI quipping back, "Oh sure! Let me just fetch that recipe for homemade cocaine because that's definitely something I'm going to assist you with."
What sets Grok apart is its integration with data from X, which xAI believes will afford it an advantage. Musk illustrated this edge with a comparative display on Sunday, demonstrating Grok's superior responses against those from a competing AI, which he noted were based on outdated information.
However, xAI has cautiously noted that Grok, like any other Large Language Model (LLM), is not immune to producing inaccurate or inconsistent information.
Currently in beta and only two months into its development, Grok is being trialed by a limited audience, with broader access pending. Interested parties are encouraged to join a waitlist to experience Grok, which Musk has announced will become part of the X Premium+ package at $16 a month.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX is positioning xAI as a contender against the likes of OpenAI, Inflection, and Anthropic.
In its preliminary benchmarking involving middle school math and Python programming challenges, Grok has reportedly outshone competitors in its computational category, including ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1, although it still lags behind larger models.
Musk praised Grok as "the best that currently exists" in some critical aspects, in a pre-launch post on X last Friday.
The moniker 'Grok' originates from Robert A. Heinlein's 1961 sci-fi classic "Stranger in a Strange Land," where 'grok' is a Martian word that embodies a profound, intuitive understanding, a definition that Merriam-Webster echoes.
Founded in July, xAI is built by a team with alumni from OpenAI and DeepMind and continues to expand its roster.
xAI's declared goal is to forge AI that enhances humanity's grasp of the cosmos. Musk has voiced concern over the trend of AI development towards "politically correct" orientations and asserts that xAI aims to cultivate AI that resonates with individuals across the spectrum of beliefs and backgrounds.
Grok is xAI's live experiment, putting this vision of AI into public trial.
